Marine certification tutoring, online across Canada

Keeping a weather eye on the subjects that actually trip people up.

Weather Eye Marine Training is one-on-one tutoring for Canadian marine certification, online across Canada, whatever stage you're at. Rather than working through a fixed curriculum, sessions start with whatever's genuinely confusing at the moment and go from there.

So, what's covered?

There isn't a tidy list, because nobody's curriculum fits on one page. The range runs from Bridge Watch Rating through Watchkeeping Mate to Master.

Stability wins most-asked-about by a wide margin, less because it suddenly makes sense and more because it eventually surrenders to enough practice. More often than not, the math sitting underneath it is the real sticking point, not the concept itself.

Chartwork and meteorology show up almost as often, which makes sense given how often the second one ruins the first. Celestial navigation still makes an appearance, sextant and all, for anyone determined to find land using only the sky and a stubborn streak. General engineering knowledge is on the list too, especially for those who joined the deck department specifically to avoid it.

The short version of ship stability: tilt her over, and G, B, and M all have opinions about what happens next.

Well, how does this work?

Sessions run over video call, with a shared screen for working through calculations together, and will follow whatever you're already working with — a course outline, an old Transport Canada exam, or just a question that's been sitting unresolved for longer than it should have. In-person sessions are also possible for those around Niagara and the GTA, and further afield isn't out of the question either.

Tutorial-format instruction is available, for an individual or a small group, covering any of what's on this site. Tutorials can run over a few intense days, a couple of weeks, or for a few hours a week for as long as you need (and probably longer than you want).

We're also approved to teach several Transport Canada courses directly, though that requires delivery through a TC-approved facility — worth knowing if you're a training provider looking to contract that out.

We're your pilot, basically — for certifications instead of harbours.

Who's actually on the other end of this

We came to tutoring by a fairly direct route: coaching classmates through subjects like math, stability, and celestial navigation back in officer training, which turned out to be good practice for later.

The sea time that followed took a typical cadet's path through a handful of vessel types, eventually settling into several years as Chief Mate on passenger boats. That stretch led to a Master 500GT certificate, along with a run of shoreside work sorting through Transport Canada's certification and regulatory requirements. All of which makes the subjects on this site so much more than theoretical, to the people teaching them.

We're also certified in Adult Education, because being good at something and being good at teaching it are, annoyingly, separate skills.

Out here, none of this was theoretical.
